The Beautiful Mither Tap, Bennachie: A Winter Photography Adventure

Exploring the Enchanting Mither Tap: Bennachie's Splendor

In my photographic pursuits, I often find myself drawn to the far reaches of Scotland and the mesmerizing landscapes of the Faroe Islands. However, recent times have urged me to focus on my local surroundings. It was during these past few weeks that I was reminded of the breathtaking beauty of Bennachie, especially in my favorite season. And when the snow arrived, I couldn't resist capturing the allure of Mither Tap from Oxen Craig.

Embarking on the journey up the Back o Bennachie was no easy task. The freezing temperatures hovering around -4°C and the three-foot-deep snow in certain places made the hour-long trek quite challenging. Determined, we would set out in the dead of night, striving to reach Oxen Craig before the break of dawn.

After six attempts, I was finally rewarded with a sight that took my breath away—a glorious sunrise accompanied by clouds dispersing just enough to reveal glimpses of Mither Tap. The soft pastel hues and the delicate interplay of shadows on the snow, highlighting every contour, brought me immense joy.

The wind howled with a forceful intensity, gusting at approximately 25mph. Securing my Gitzo tripod became crucial in such conditions. Fortunately, beneath the snow lay a layer of ice, which prevented any movement thanks to the tripod spikes. I kept the tripod wide and close to the ground, patiently sitting in the snow, waiting for the clouds to part and unveil the iconic summit.

The remainder of the morning was nothing short of extraordinary. As the wind subsided, the untouched snow across the vast expanse of Bennachie presented a sight that was nothing short of magical.
