Rising from the Creative Abyss: A Journey of Rediscovering Passion
There comes a time in every artist's life when inspiration seems elusive, a time when the spark of creativity dims, and the passion that once burned bright starts to flicker. This was my reality as 2018 was drawing to a close, a year that should have been the pinnacle of my creative journey. I had just completed a whirlwind of 40 weddings, my days consumed by capturing cherished moments for others. Amidst the whirlwind, I found myself at the intersection of creativity and chaos, struggling to hold on to what made my artistry unique.
Identifying the Creative Abyss
As the shutter clicked and the last wedding concluded, a sense of emptiness crept in. My life was a blend of wedding schedules, caring for my young family, and a growing realisation that my own creative expression was fading away. The demands of life left me with limited time for experimentation, and slowly but surely, my passion began to dissipate.
Emotional Journey
It was a silent struggle, one I kept hidden behind a façade of professionalism. The camera continued to capture love stories, but inside, I felt a growing disheartenment. The question of identity lingered in the shadows: Was I an artist if I couldn't create? The inability to share these feelings with others only deepened the isolation, making the journey out of the creative abyss seem insurmountable.
Exploring Solutions
Then, 2020 brought an unexpected pause. The world collectively took a breath as the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to life as we knew it. With weddings on hold, I was able to breath again, to rest.
I made a radical decision – to step away from photography, if only temporarily. I enrolled in college, seeking a new perspective, a mental reset.
This hiatus gave me the mind break I so desperately needed. The weight of expectations lifted, and the canvas of my creativity was blank once again. The lectures, the discussions – they stirred something within me, a dormant ember that had been buried beneath the demands of the past. I learned that sometimes, stepping back is the key to moving forward.
Turning Point
Amidst the tumultuous years, a conversation I had in the Faroe Islands became the beacon that guided me back to my creative calling. A dear friend and fellow photographer Scott Johnson asked a simple yet profound question: "If I had a gun to your head and made you choose between landscapes and weddings, what would you choose?" The answer was swift – "landscape." In that instant, I realised that my wedding photography chapter was drawing to a close, a revelation that coincided with the impending move at any moment from Scotland to the Faroe Islands.
The decision to conclude my wedding photography career was bittersweet but liberating. No longer weighed down by the pressures of trying to balance two artistic worlds, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The Faroe Islands, with their rugged landscapes and untamed beauty, became the perfect backdrop for this new chapter.
Rediscovering Passion
The path to reigniting my creative spark was slow, but it began with a simple idea – embracing adventure and exploration through the lens. The Faroe Islands became my muse, a place where uncharted territory met the camera's gaze.
During Margaret Soraya's Creative Light Workshop where I was giving a talk. My talk to the crowed was my form of therapy and I titled it "Therapy". I explained to the audience my situation and had a conversation with fellow photographers where they offered up advice. Although this was for me, it was also a way for other people in the crowed who are going thorough the same situation or late in life, come to the same situation and remember this moment.
A slight spark was ignited when one member of the audience suggested that I pick a new location, visit, capture the surroundings and write a journal of my experience.
But the main turning point was solidified during a bird photography tour in the Faroe Islands, where I experienced the thrill of capturing beauty anew.
Every click was a dance between art and nature, a rhythm that flowed from the camera to the heart. The thrill of the hunt, the exhilaration of a perfect shot – these experiences were like kindling, reigniting the creative flame that had been dormant for far too long. Spending the week with like minded photographers who were all unique in their own way allowed me to explore the different opportunities.
Lessons Learned
Through the haze of uncertainty, a lesson emerged: creativity is both elusive and unpredictable. It ebbs and flows, sometimes disappearing altogether, only to resurface unexpectedly. A journey like mine requires listening to both heart and head, and acknowledging that creative evolution demands patience.
I realised that my creative process was an ever-changing landscape, much like the scenes I captured through my lens. It's okay to experience moments of stagnation, for they are the valleys that make the peaks all the more breathtaking. The key is to embrace these shifts, to allow them to shape you as an artist, and to recognise that even in the darkest moments, the ember of creativity is never truly extinguished.
Advice for Others
For those struggling to reignite their creative flames, remember that the journey is uniquely yours. The path to rediscovering your creative passion may twist and turn, encompassing different avenues and unexpected detours. It's a quest that may involve taking a step back, breathing, and allowing time to be the catalyst. In the end, the artist's spirit is resilient, capable of transcending even the darkest creative abyss.
When faced with creative stagnation, consider seeking inspiration beyond your comfort zone. Engage in conversations with fellow creatives, explore new environments, and embrace the unfamiliar. Sometimes, the simple act of venturing into uncharted territory can awaken dormant sparks and lead to a renaissance of creativity.
Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all solution to reigniting creativity. It's a personal journey that requires patience, self-discovery, and a willingness to adapt. Trust in the power of time and resilience, and allow yourself the space to evolve as an artist.
In the end, my journey from the depths of the creative abyss to the soaring heights of rekindled passion was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of art. Just as the Faroe Islands' landscapes shifted with the changing light, so too did my creative landscape transform with each step of my journey.
As you navigate your own creative challenges, know that the shadows will eventually give way to light, and your artistic spirit will find its way back to the surface. Embrace the journey, for it is within the depths that you'll discover the true essence of your creative self.
